WHISKEY CORNER QUESTION:
It is not surprising that when you work with lots of whiskies and have been around them them for a long time, the most regular question that is asked is “What is your Favorite whiskey?” A great question, although unfortunately, very hard to answer quickly, unless of course, the person who asked has already moved on to more questions before allowing an answer – this happens too, not as often.
I like to think my brain sorting system is well organized. Favorite, by itself, allows for answer across each of the different countries, regions, types and styles, somewhat like modern Whiskey competitions that offer Gold Medals to fine well made whiskies in each variation of the category, by age grouping, singles or blends, regions and even countries, with one then winning Double gold or best in 2 tiers, and then the very Best overall of that Category, with the others winning Silver or Bronze as good but not the best, and favorable mention, not as bad as the very worst submitted.
Even on a panel of five whiskies like we pour at our Tastings here at Off The Vine, each one selected in combination of the others as another example that is well crafted but with different characteristics that make it an interesting whiskey to experience, to add to our mental palate of tastes, rather than one being worst and one being best
WHAT WE DO KNOW:
Every distiller creates a unique spirit from the water, grain & yeast that they use, then they use sometimes a variety of different barrel types & woods, they allow some to mature longer than others, and as they do their flavor-chains grow and mature, creating new and more unique tastes in the flavor, each is a story, each is a taste, and we thank them for making it!
